“It’s our mindset and determination that define us.” – Abez Shimelash

Born in Gojam, located in the northwest of Ethiopia, Abez lost her vision at the age of eight. However, she refused to let that stop her from chasing her dreams. From selling lotteries on the streets of Addis Ababa to earning a Bachelor’s degree in Special Needs Education from Addis Ababa University, Abez’s story is one of courage, perseverance, and unwavering determination.

Despite facing numerous challenges: unsafe roads, theft, and societal discouragement, Abez never gave up. Instead, she focused on developing her entrepreneurial skills and striving for independence. Recently, she joined STEMpower’s training program, delivered in collaboration with Light for the World and Crosswise, where she gained valuable financial and time management skills that transformed her approach to both life and business.

Abez believes that while challenges are a universal experience, overcoming them is all about mindset. Today, she is more committed than ever to empowering others, particularly people with disabilities, and inspiring them to reach their full potential.
